Numicon Professional Development
There have been some amazing transformations in children’s confidence and achievement using Numicon over the last ten years. However, as with most things, anyone who just buys a Numicon kit and expects the magic to start working will be disappointed. This is why we often use the phrase “there’s no magic in the plastic” in our Numicon NCETM accredited training and why we see training and support as such an important part of what we do.

The first and perhaps most important source of support is the Teaching Guide provided in the file; please do take the time to read this initially and we hope that you find it useful to refer back to as you start to teach with Numicon.
In addition to the Teaching Guide, the following professional development and support options are available to you:

Key note presentations up to one hour in length are tailored to the particular focus of the conference. However presentations usually include the following: Consideration of the factors which influence pupils’ mathematics learning an explanation of the rationale and learning theory underpinning the Numicon approach to teaching arithmetic and an overview of the Numicon teaching programme. Presentations are illustrated with photographs and video (where applicable). A small exhibition of Numicon teaching materials can be mounted. For more information call us on 01865 353735.

About our professional development
Numicon PD ensures that Numicon is used to its best advantage, releasing its potential to transform children’s attitude to maths and significantly increase their achievement. Our team of enthusiastic, accredited consultants deliver interactive PD, giving direct experience of Numicon activities and insight into the underpinning theory. It gives teachers a chance to reflect on their pedagogy, and supports them in processing new and challenging ideas. We aim for participants to feel inspired, confident and keen to start using Numicon straight away whether in the classroom, in support groups or one-to-one.
“A great introduction to a new concept; good ideas provided; the course covered lots of ground”
“Excellent – clear and inspiring”
“The speaker was easy to listen to; the session was well explained and demonstrated very clearly”
“Theory and rationale were useful; good interactive activities”
“Wish we could have had longer; really informative – thank you!”

Who is our professional development for?
We offer PD to schools, local authority teams, Learning Support Teams, Mathematics consultants and parents (usually through special needs conferences) and charities.
What professional development involves
Our workshops are designed to instil confidence to start teaching mathematics using a multi-sensory approach, supported by the Numicon mathematics system and other visual imagery. The workshops enable you to:
Explore the underlying rationale and learning theory of a multi-sensory approach;
Have an overview of the Numicon teaching programme;
Consider the factors affecting children’s mathematical learning (including pupils with SEN);
Consider how to get started with older children who are new to Numicon.
And most importantly, you will have plenty of hands-on practice using Numicon products and activities! Workshops are kept small (up to 30 participants, who work in small groups) to maximize hands-on practice, discussion and reflection.
